Before you get started, here are the essentials:

Step 1 – Preparation

Protect the surrounding area before applying any primer, paint, or stain to your fencing. Cover nearby grass, plants, and garden furniture with plastic sheets, and move any obstructions out of the way. Trim back overhanging branches or hedges, or pin/tie them away from the fence, as fencing solutions can be harmful. Ensure everything remains in place until the work is complete and dry.

Step 2 – Optimise the surface

For the best overall coverage and to ensure proper absorption of any stain or primer into the wooden panels, you must remove any dirt, old nails, and mildew from them. You can do this manually or by using a power washer for stubborn areas. Keep in mind that if you use a washer, you’ll need to allow enough time for the panels to dry.  If you’re painting a fence that was previously painted but is now flaking and untidy, sand your panels to achieve a smooth surface and a professional-level finish.

Step 3 – Apply your first coat

Before you start, make sure to check the weather forecast for a warm, dry day with no rain or wind.  If you’re planning to paint your fence, begin by applying a primer using a brush or roller. This will act as an adhesive for your paint and prevent mold growth. Allow the primer to dry for the recommended time, usually a few hours.

Next, you can either spray or brush on your chosen exterior wood paint.  If you’re using a fence treatment solution for protection and colour, start by either spraying or brushing on your chosen stain.Remember, when using a brush, apply a generous amount of stain and apply a thick coat without stretching it too far.

  • Suitable for both spraying and brushing application on either rough-sawn or smooth-planed fences
  • Rainproof in just one hour
  • Offers up to 5 years of protection

Sit back and enjoy!

All that is left to do now is clean up, remove any plastic sheets, return your garden furniture to its original location and clean any brushes using warm, soapy water.

Maximise Space, Maintain Privacy, Enhance Style

Need to find the perfect mix of privacy, openness and light? Look no further than lattice style fence panels.

The interwoven design of these panels allows sunlight to filter through, meaning that your garden space can feel light, airy and open without completely compromising on privacy.

The subtle lattice detailing on decorative fence panels elevates the aesthetics of your garden, adding a minimalist appeal. These panels can be accentuated further by incorporating climbing plants.

This added burst of colour provides a focal point for your space and allows you to create a natural feel to your small garden.

Decorative fence panels from Grangewood come in a wide range of style options, making them suitable for all manner of garden spaces, including fencing for small front gardens.

Horizontal Slatted Fence Panels

Dual Purpose Design

Vertical gardening on trellis panels maximizes space and adds greenery to smaller gardens.

A trellis, more open-framed than lattice fencing, can support fast-growing plants like ivy or jasmine.

These plants grow over the trellis openings, maintaining privacy and creating a lush barrier.

Vertical gardening creates a stunning visual display and optimizes limited garden space.

It adds depth and interest to the fence, bringing nature into your living area.

Our Square & Diamond Trellis panels are versatile enough to add a degree of privacy to your garden, without completely obstructing your view. With bow, dome, omega and flat top options, we have something that will perfectly finish your garden project.

Modern, Yet Inviting

For a modern, contemporary look, consider the use of horizontal fencing for small gardens.

These fence panels offer a similar level of light to a lattice design, with an added sense of sophistication.

In a small garden space it can be beneficial to opt for a lighter coloured timber to help reflect light and make the garden feel more spacious. However, for the ultimate in modern contemporary design, we offer Specialised Slatted Fence Panels that are available in a dramatic anthracite grey colour to provide a twist on traditional garden fencing.

Also available in a natural timber finish, our slatted fence panels provide a perfect boundary to garden areas both big and small, offering an ideal balance of privacy and light penetration.
