Kiln dried firewood vs freshly cut firewood

Kiln dried firewood is much more efficient to burn as it is dried to less than 20% moisture content, whereas freshly cut wood can have a 60%+ moisture content. Drier wood generates more heat so kiln dried logs will heat a room much more effectively than freshly cut logs.

The lower moisture content will also generate around x5 less smoke of freshly felled wood, making it safer to burn.

Hardwood vs softwood logs  – which burns better?

Although softwood is generally easier to light, hardwood firelogs have a higher density and so will keep a fire burning longer. We recommend using Kiln Dried Kindling to get your fire started, and to then add 1-2 hardwood logs depending on fire/room size.

Wood burning safety

Burning wet wood can be detrimental to flues and chimneys. Over time deposits of tar can cling and build up putting you at risk of a flue or chimney fire.
Whichever wood you burn, it is important you get your chimney swept and inspected regularly.
HETAS encourage having your chimney swept at least twice a year when burning wood or bituminous house coal and at least once a year when burning smokeless fuels. The best times to have your chimney swept are just before the start of the heating season and after your stove has not been used over a prolonged period.” – HETAS website
